Girl 12, had abortion after rape.
The perverted past of drug addict joseph Riley caught up with him when he was convicted of twice raping a 12-year-old girl many years ago.
A jury heard how on one occasion the victim became pregnant and had an abortion. Riley (44) of Aquarium Street in Rhyl, denied two rape charges dating back nearly 20 years ago but was unanimously convicted by a jury of four men and eight women.
Judge Merfyn Hughes QC remanded him in custody pending sentence next month – but warned him to expect a very long sentence of between 11 and 17 years, depending on the information in reports.
Riley, who denied any such thing ever happened, shook his head slowly in the dock when the jury foreman returned the verdicts at Mold Crown Court, sitting in Chester.
The victim now a young woman in her 20s, told the jury how the sex assaults had affected her life – but how she felt better now that she had the courage to report what had happened to her all those years ago.
Other women had spoken of the defendants sexual acts when they were younger and in 1996 he had been jailed for 12 months for indecent assault upon a child. It was not until 2010, that the victim felt able to inform the police of what had occurred.
It emerged that she had been raped on two occasions and became pregnant. She recalled a train journey to Chester and having an abortion.
The jury heard claims that the girl had at the time told a friend what had occurred and the defendant was subjected to a hammer attack by two men.
It was claimed years later she saw the defendant and confronted him and he started crying and said he was sorry.
Riley denied anything sexual had ever occurred and claimed that it was all made up. The court heard Riley was currently awaiting sentence for a separate charge of allowing his home to be used for the supply of Heroin, a class “A” drug, which he had admitted.
Riley, originally from Liverpool, was later sentenced to 13 years for rape, and 3 years for drug offences.
